THE AUSTRALIAN WOMEN’S HEALTH DIARY 2015

10/12/2014

This Aussie Christmas Present Saves Lives: The Australian Women’s Health Diary 2015

The Australian Women’s Health Diary 2015 is a Christmas present with a difference – it raises money for breast cancer, a disease that claims seven lives in Australia every day.

Every diary sold supports breast cancer research

Since the first edition was printed in 1999, the Australian Women’s Health Diary has raised $10 million for breast cancer clinical trials conducted by the Australia and New Zealand Breast Cancer Trials Group (ANZBCTG).

Through clinical trials, researchers can identify the safety and benefit of new treatments to give women the best chance of overcoming breast cancer.

One of these clinical trials is POEMS (Prevention of Early Menopause Study Trial) which aimed to identify a new treatment to prevent early menopause and infertility which are common side effects for young women with breast cancer who need chemotherapy treatment.

Professor Fran Boyle, a medical oncologist and Chair of the ANZBCTG research program, says:

“The POEMS clinical trial results, presented recently, showed that women in the clinical trial who received goserelin were less likely to be in menopause two years after their breast cancer treatment and were twice as likely to have a normal pregnancy after their breast cancer treatment, compared with those who did not receive goserelin”.

Natasha was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 32

Natasha Eaton is one of Professor Fran Boyle’s patients who was eligible to participate in POEMS. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008, and fell pregnant with Jack the Christmas after her treatment.

“I call Jack my Christmas miracle!” said Natasha.

“I know how lucky I am to have fallen pregnant and to have a beautiful, healthy little boy. I am also delighted that I helped prove – along with other women around the world – this new treatment option for women like me who need chemotherapy and who might want to have a family in the future.”
