About Dr Belinda Kiely

Dr Belinda Kiely is a medical oncologist specialising in the treatment of breast cancer, with a focus on clinical research to improve symptoms and side effects associated with cancer and its treatment. She holds over 15 years of clinical experience and is a senior lecturer at the University of Sydney, with clinical roles at Campbelltown Hospital and Concord Hospital in Sydney.

She is the study chair of the Breast Cancer Trials OPTIMA clinical trial, which is looking to find out if using a test called Prosigna can help make safe and accurate decisions about whether or not chemotherapy treatment is needed for participants with ER-positive, HER2-negative early breast cancer.

Biography

Dr Kiely’s research focuses on breast cancer treatment, prognostication and survivorship. She has a keen interest in the management of menopausal symptoms in women with breast cancer.

She served on the Advanced Breast Cancer International Consensus panel in 2019 and 2023, helping to establish guidelines for managing advanced breast cancer. Her research interests include breast cancer treatment, prognostication, survivorship, and the management of menopausal symptoms in women with breast cancer.

Qualifications and Professional Experience

Dr Kiely completed a fellowship in breast cancer and cancer genetics at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne and earned a PhD from the University of Sydney with her thesis, “Estimating and Communicating Prognosis in Advanced Cancer.” In addition to supervising PhD students, she mentors medical oncology trainees and students.

Dr Kiely completed her undergraduate studies at the University of New South Wales and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.
